1. The True Meaning of "Galvanized" – Zinc Coating Uniformity & Adhesion
Most customers simply ask for "galvanized hex mesh." But not all galvanization is equal. There are two overlooked sub-factors:
Coating uniformity (µm distribution): Low-quality mesh has uneven zinc layers – thick on the outside of the wire but thin at wire intersections (the most vulnerable points). At Pauleen, we control electro-galvanizing or hot-dip processes to ensure a minimum 98% coating uniformity, with strict adherence to ASTM A641 or BS 443 standards.
Adhesion (bend test): Inferior zinc flakes off when the mesh is bent or woven. Our factory performs mandrel bend tests on every batch – no peeling, no cracking.
Pauleen tip: Ask for the zinc coating weight (g/m²) per wire surface area, not just "heavy galvanized." For outdoor use, we recommend ≥250 g/m² for hot-dipped hex mesh.
2. Edge Selvage Type – Twisted-and-Barbed vs. Selvedge (Knuckled)
Many buyers ignore how the mesh edges are finished. This directly determines installation stability and safety.
Twisted-and-barbed edge: Each wire end is twisted into a sharp barb. Excellent for security fencing (prisons, high-risk perimeters) but dangerous for animal enclosures or residential gardens.
Selvedge (knuckled) edge: The wire ends are twisted back into a smooth, rounded loop. Far safer for poultry, small animals, and erosion control. It also reduces fabric unraveling during tensioning.
Pauleen automatically recommends selvedge edges for 85% of agricultural or landscaping applications unless specified otherwise. We also offer double-twist selvedge for extra tensile strength.
Pauleen tip: Check your edge type in the product drawing. Most low-cost suppliers give you barbed edges without notice.
3. Aperture Tolerance & Mesh Count Consistency
The nominal hexagonal opening (e.g., 25mm, 13mm, 50mm) is rarely the actual opening across the entire roll. Cheap machines produce variable pitch, leading to:
Drifting mesh count: One meter of mesh may have 12.5 cells, the next meter only 11.8 cells. This creates weak zones when stretched.
Irregular hexagon shape: Instead of perfect regular hexagons, you get distorted diamonds – altering the mesh's load distribution.
Our ten years of production data show that Pauleen's CNC weaving looms maintain a tolerance of ±3% on aperture size across 200 meters of continuous roll. We also provide a mesh count per linear meter chart for every batch.
Pauleen tip: Request a consistency report – the standard deviation of aperture size across 10 random points. We deliver ≤1.5mm variance for 50mm hex mesh.
4. Wire Tensile Strength – Not Just Diameter
Most buyers specify "1.2mm wire" but ignore the underlying steel grade. A 1.2mm low-carbon wire (e.g., Q195) has roughly 350–420 MPa tensile strength, while a 1.2mm Q235 or equivalent can reach 490–610 MPa.
For applications like rockfall protection or gabion boxes, tensile strength matters more than diameter. A thinner high-tensile wire (0.9mm, 550 MPa) can outperform a thicker low-tensile wire (1.2mm, 380 MPa) in breaking load.
At Pauleen, we source from traceable steel mills and certify every coil with mill test certificates (MTC) showing:
Tensile strength (MPa)
Elongation percentage (ductility)
Carbon content (≤0.12% for soft, 0.12-0.20% for semi-hard)
Pauleen tip: Define both wire diameter AND tensile strength class in your RFQ. For gabions, we recommend 2.0mm Ø with ≥500 MPa.
5. Corrosion Resistance Beyond Zinc – Polymer Coating Bonding
For harsh environments (coastal, acidic soil, chemical plants), even hot-dipped galvanized hex mesh may fail in 5-7 years. Many buyers then ask for PVC or nylon coating – but overlook bonding strength.
Poor-quality PVC coating separates from the zinc layer within months due to:
No adhesive primer between zinc and PVC
Inadequate curing temperature during extrusion
Pauleen uses a dual-layer extrusion process:
Zinc layer (hot-dip, 275 g/m²)
Epoxy-based adhesion promoter
UV-stabilized PVC or PE coating (0.4mm – 0.8mm thickness)
We test peel strength per ISO 4624: >5 MPa (megapascals) – meaning you cannot strip the coating with a fingernail. Our PVC-coated hex mesh has passed 1,000-hour salt spray tests (ASTM B117) without underfilm corrosion.
Pauleen tip: For 15+ year outdoor life, order Galvanized + PVC coated (commonly called "green mesh" or "plastic coated hex netting"). Specify "coating peel strength ≥5 MPa."
