Section 1: Professional Installation Guidelines for Steel Fencing Systems
A correct installation is fundamental to ensuring structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
1.1 Pre-Installation Planning & Site Preparation
Site Survey & Layout: Conduct a thorough site assessment. Establish the fence line using string lines and stakes. Identify and mark underground utilities (e.g., electrical, gas, water) to avoid damage during post-hole digging.
Material Inspection: Verify all components (posts, panels, rails, balusters, caps, brackets, and fasteners) against the packing list. Check for any shipping damage.
Foundation Planning: Determine the frost line depth in your region to set posts below it, preventing heaving. For Pauleen's heavy-duty fences, we recommend a concrete footing for each post.
1.2 Post Installation – The Critical Framework
Post Hole Specifications: Dig holes to a depth of at least 24-36 inches (600-900mm) or 1/3 of the above-ground post height, plus 6 inches for gravel base. Diameter should be three times the post width.
Setting Posts:
Place 6 inches of gravel in the hole for drainage.
Insert the galvanized steel post, using a level to ensure perfect plumb in both directions.
Use temporary bracing to hold the post in position.
Pour high-strength, ready-mix concrete into the hole, sloping it away from the post at the top to shed water.
Allow concrete to cure fully (typically 24-48 hours) before attaching panels.
1.3 Panel & Rail Assembly
Panel Mounting: For pre-assembled panels, lift them into position between the set posts. Use stainless steel self-tapping screws or bolt-through fixings (provided) to secure panels to posts via pre-drilled holes. Ensure panels are level.
Component Assembly (For Modular Systems): For systems where horizontal rails, vertical balusters (pickets), and post infill sections are assembled on-site:
Attach rail brackets to posts at specified heights.
Insert top and bottom rails into brackets or post channels.
Insert balusters into pre-drilled holes in the rails. For Pauleen's signature designs, balusters often feature a snap-lock or interlocking system for secure, tool-free assembly.
Secure all connections with provided fasteners. A rubber mallet may be used to tap components into place without damaging the powder coating.
1.4 Final Checks & Finishing
Install post caps to seal the post tops, preventing water ingress.
Verify the entire fence line is aligned, level, and secure.
Inspect all fasteners for tightness.
Section 2: Essential Maintenance Protocol for Long-Term Performance
While Pauleen's fences are built with hot-dip galvanized steel substrate and a superior electrostatic powder-coated finish for exceptional corrosion resistance, proactive maintenance ensures decades of service.
2.1 Routine Inspection & Cleaning
Frequency: Bi-annually (Spring and Fall).
Visual Inspection: Check for any chips, scratches, or abrasions in the powder coat that expose the underlying metal.
Cleaning Procedure:
Rinse the fence with a garden hose to remove loose dirt.
Wash with a mild detergent or neutral pH car wash soap and a soft cloth or sponge.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
For stubborn dirt or organic stains (e.g., mildew), use a diluted mixture of vinegar and water. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners.
2.2 Damage Repair & Touch-Up
Minor Coating Damage: For small scratches or chips:
Lightly sand the affected area with fine-grit (e.g., 400) sandpaper to remove rust and create a smooth edge.
Clean the area with a degreaser/isopropyl alcohol.
Apply a zinc-rich primer designed for galvanized steel.
Once dry, apply Pauleen-provided or color-matched touch-up paint (matching our RAL or custom color code) to restore the protective barrier.
2.3 Structural & Hardware Checks
Annual Inspection: Check for loose fasteners and tighten as necessary. Inspect posts for any signs of movement or concrete cracking.
Gate Maintenance: Lubricate gate hinges and latches annually with a silicone-based lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
2.4 Winter & Environmental Considerations
In areas with heavy snowfall, avoid piling snow directly against the fence using snowblowers, as ice and abrasive materials can stress the coating.
Remove climbing vines or vegetation, as they can retain moisture and cause damage over time.
